this Gel should be applied once a day, before going to bed. Apply a thin layer of Generic Tretinoin Cream to the affected area of the skin where acne lesions appear, using just enough to lightly cover the entire affected area. Use the product after immediately washing your hands. Using this medication more frequently or in excess does not improve results and may worsen side effects. Because this medication can irritate sensitive skin, it’s best to avoid applying it near the eyes, mouth, or open wounds. When the medication is first used, acne may appear to worsen; continue therapy. It may take three to six weeks for the full effects of this medication to become apparent. When washing your face, use a gentle soap. Avoid over-washing your face. Abrasive soaps, cleansers, medicated creams, and lotions can irritate the skin. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using them. While using this medication, use caution with other acne treatments.

Mechanism and Drug Class

Tretinoin is a vitamin A derivative. This cream is used to treat mild to moderate acne as well as skin damage caused by excessive sun exposure. Tretinoin irritates the skin and causes skin cells to grow (divide) and die more quickly, thereby increasing cell turnover. The number of skin cell layers is actually reduced. New cells replace the cells of existing pimples in acne patients, and the rapid turnover of cells prevents new pimples from forming. Through a similar mechanism, tretinoin can reduce some wrinkles, darken skin areas, and rough skin areas that occur in sun-damaged skin. Improvements in the skin of patients with sun-damaged skin are usually visible within the first 3 to 4 weeks of treatment. After six to eight weeks, brown spots begin to fade. After three to six months, wrinkles diminish or disappear. A small amount of the drug is absorbed into the body after application to the skin. In 1971, the FDA approved topical Tretinoin.
